Stara Baška is a village two kilometers long in the southern part of the island of Krk, and along its entire length there are beaches and beaches, from those sandy, rocky to those with rocks. Unlike most other old coastal settlements characterized by compact houses with narrow winding streets, the shape of Stara Baška in which the houses are considerably distant from each other, is conditioned by the terrain on which the village is located. These are steep slopes on which the possibility is built narrowed to a narrow area along the coast and only in certain localities of the belt. At the end of Stara Baška is the beach Zala. Above the beach is the ruins of the church of St. Jerome.
The place is located in the eponymous bay of the open type, but which the mentioned hills protect from the bora, and the peninsula Klobučac, protected from the south. Nevertheless, Stara Baška is one of the windiest parts of the island. Due to the frequent and strong bora, the surrounding hills are bare, with low-growing vegetation among which the medicinal sage is a very common plant. There is more lush vegetation only along the narrow coastal belt and in areas protected from the bora. At the end of the place is a small port (port) which, in addition to the boats of local locals, provides security in the summer and many boaters and tourist boats. The depth in the port is great, especially on the inside of the mule, but it is not a safe shelter from storms.
Stara Baška was founded in the 14th century as a settlement of refugees before the Turkish invasions, where they founded their own pastoral village at the end of the island. Until the second half of the 17th century, it was called Kraj or Pod Kraj, and the locals called it Krajanima. From the 17th century, the present name Stara Baška began to be used, although in fact Baška is older than Stara Baška at the time of its origin. Until 1886, the village belonged to the municipality of Baška, however, then the municipality of Punat was founded. Stara Baška is annexed to that municipality, although it is closer to Baška by air. The reason for this is that the road to Baška crosses high and steep hills and is difficult to pass, and impossible for a car, while the connection with Punat is much better. Even today, there is only one road leading to Stara Baška, from Punat.
For centuries, the people of Krajina and Stara Baška have been shepherds, shepherds, and even today sheep farming is an important economic branch. However, due to its unique natural beauty and unique ambience, the main economic branch today is tourism and catering. Almost every house has several apartments that are the main source of income for most locals. Next to the local Church of All Saints there is the only shop in the village, and a tavern. Stara Baška has three boarding houses with restaurants and one pizzeria. The only major farm building in Stara Baška is located at the entrance to the place, the camp “Škrila”.
