Taxi Krk

The town of Krk is one of the oldest urban settlements in Croatia, and some believe that Homer also knew about Krk, because in his epic he mentions Koureto, which according to some scientists may be about Krk. The founders of the city were the Illyrians from the Liburnian tribe Curicta, and that name meant those who inhabit the stone island (Kar-ikt) and after them the city got its Roman name Curicum, and its shortening led to the Croatian name of the island and the city of Kark, Church to Krk.

The town of Krk is located in an unprotected bay in the valley. When comparing the medieval castles of Omišalj, Dobrinj, Vrbnik and Baška, which were founded by Croats in the 7th century on the site of former Illyrian settlements, one can clearly see the essential difference between the position of these castles and the position of the town of Krk.

After Curicta, the city was ruled by the Romans, behind their rule traces are still visible today; parts of the city walls, the remains of thermal baths and capitals in churches and lunettes in private houses. Even during Roman rule in the 3rd and 4th centuries, Christianity came to Krk and the first church was built.

After the war, Krk became part of the Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia, and since then the city has turned to the development of tourism, which developed especially after the construction of the Krk Bridge and the airport on Krk. At that time, the first island highway was built, which connects Krk with the Adriatic Highway and the interior of the country. Today, the city of Krk is the administrative, political, economic and religious center of the island of Krk.
